I am training for a two mile surface swim, in order to raise some money for charity in memory of our good friend John Pauls. John died tragically in the Red Sea last May, whilst on a diving holiday with the Club.
John was a really lively character, loved by everybody who knew him, and we still miss him.
I am hoping to carry out the swim on or about Wednesday, 23 May, at the Epic Centre, from about 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. The pool is 33.3 metres in length so I reckon I need to do about 98 lengths.
Anybody who would like to help me, by counting the lengths for me and keeping me informed of how much I have done, and how I'm doing for time, would be very welcome. I'd also be grateful for vocal support during the last ten lengths or so when it may get tiring and cold.
I may use the web site www.Justgiving.com for anybody who would prefer to pay that way. I'm not sure about that yet, nor has it been decided which Charity should benefit. I'll let you know.
I'm not looking for big donations. A fiver per person would be great but if anyone wishes to donate more, or less, that would be fine. If I use the above site I think the donations would be anonymous, although it would give the final total.
You may wish to pledge your support using this forum but there is no need to state the amount publicly.
Not everybody in the club looks at this forum so I'll get some leaflets run off and distribute them.
I have now set up the details regarding the Charity swim in memory of John Pauls.
Anybody wishing to donate using the Charity site can simply click on www.justgiving.com/GedShannon and follow the donate link. -- Edited by triggerfish at 17:17, 2007-05-10
I managed to complete the John Pauls Memorial Charity swim last night, supported by an audience of Biohazard, Archer, Scubaone, Mac, Trish, Leaky and Katie Current. Thanks a lot for that, it spurred me on.
Sponsorship money has already exceeded anything I imagined. I am using a specialist internet charity site, called justgiving, for donations. The beauty of using this method for donations is that anything you may donate through the site is given an extra 28% from the taxman which really boosts the the total. In addition, anybody in the higher tax bracket of 40% can claim 18% back from the taxman, effectively reducing their donation. Justgiving handle everything and I don't have to handle the cash.
My chosen charity is the North West Air Ambulance service.
If you haven't already donated, and would like to do it through the charity website, please click on the link:
Thanks Terry. A few others have had the same problem as you.
If you look at my posting of 10 May and click on the link it should work without a problem. I don't know why the other one doesn't. Please try again as donations via justgiving attract 28% gift aid. Direct donations do not. Cheers
£532.26 raised so far, including Gift Aid. Well done everybody. It's good to see our memories of John Pauls still mean so much to us all. There have also been some very generous donations from people who didn't know John, and I would particularly like to thank them for their kindness.
I'll let you know the final figure soon as there is still plenty of time to make donations.
I know some of you asked to be kept up to date about the fund raising through the Just Giving site. I've looked at the standard email they send and I think it is too impersonal and formal. You will have got a standard email from them when you donated through the site, believing it was from me, so you'll know what I mean.
Several club members also paid me directly and I thought I'd let everybody know how the fundraising is going.
Over £616 has been raised so far, including gift aid, and there may be one or two more donations to come but I'm not sure. Donations can be made through justgiving until 9 August and I will of course accept direct donations. It is better though to contribute through the justgiving site as this attracts generous gift aid.
I am staggered by the generosity of so many people. The idea of the swim was mainly meant as a memorial to John Pauls and the fund raising was an afterthought. It occurred to me at the time that if we raised about £100 we'd have done well.
The amount raised showed how much people thought of John, although I must pay tribute to a number of people who donated very generously even though they never knew him.
Thanks very much everybody, and thanks again to those of you who turned up on the night of the swim to give me encouragement to keep going.
If any further donations are made before the closing date I'll let you know the final amount in August.
