Sunday 17/02/2008 - Capernwry ???????

As my lurgy is just about gone and I'm starting to dry out through lack of diving, I was considering a splash about at the Cape - yes I know most of you like the Delph, but.........

Anyway, who's up for it then ?

Can also see if anyone fancies a run down to Portland in March     biggrin.gif

glad to hear you are back in the land of the living Vet.
I've got visitors this weekend so I can't make it Sunday. I should be ok for the 24 though. I'll be away for a few days from Monday to Thursday so I'll check the site  when I get back to see if anybody is likely to dive on 24th.
Six of us went to Dorothea last week and that was, as ever, great. We couldn't see the water for the fog when we were going in but by the time we surfaced it was glorious sunshine.
It's time we all came out of hibernation. I've never known such a quiet few months as we usually dive throughout the winter.biggrin

There are a few of us going to Anglesey to dive Menai Strait. So far i think, me, Leaky, JT, Paul Horton and possibly John Collins.  Haven't made any arrangements yet other than the decision to go.  But we can firm that up at breakfast tomorrow.

RE: Sunday 17/02/2008 - Capernwray ???????

Today we were going for our first open water dive UK 2008!  First task was to scrape 1 inch of ice from car, handed the baton to Nick at this point!  Outside temperature was recorded at -4 deg and going through my head was Dive? Warm bed? Dive? Warm bed?  So we packed the car and headed off to Anglesey.

Diving the Menai Strait at the base of the old bridge, the water was flat calm and it was considerably warmer by 10.30!  Because of tides, we had to be in the water by 11.45 at the latest, we were surface swimming and ready to descend by 11.40.  Dropped slowly down to 15.8 metres, there was a bit of  current, but nothing too strong.  Plenty of crabs and starfish, lots of anemones and small hermit crabs.  Saw quite a large dog fish about 2 foot long and possibly some weaver fish. Not much traffic on the strait either, so in all a lovely dive. We did around a 40 minute dive and with a water temperature of constant 7 it was getting a bit cold. In the summer months this will be a great two dive location(short on parking though) with the second dive following the old telephone cable.  Good days diving and fabulous weather, even the sea was an amazing blue today instead of the usual grey.

Cleopatra at the Antarctic !!!!!

Yes it was cold getting up this morning, a cool -6 at the coast, still, by the time the two hardy MSD's arrived at Capernwray for their first dives of the year it had warmed up to a trmendous -3 !!!!

Undaunted by this, we kitted up and strode to the waters edge (the jetty was off limits due to ice) and, having broken the ice at the waters edge, strode into the slightly cool water, though at 5 degrees it was like a heated pool compared to the air temp.

Good first dive, which included the two huge sturgeon, but the older "wrecks" are certainly showing signs of age.

After a nice warming sit in the cafe, we went for a second dive, air temp now up to 5 degrees, water still at 5 degrees; BUT we did find the new boat located just passed the horses - The Cleopatra, all 23 feet of her.

The owners are also planning a "big" wreck for later in the year, but won't say what it is.

They have put the price up to £12 per visit, though you can pre book 10 visits for £100 if you are flush; for this you now get new heated toilet and shower block at the lower car park and the promise of an enhanced internet site, complete with realtime cam link so that other halves can keep a watchful eye !

All in all, great couple of dives to start the year off now that the lurgy has gone, had a problem clearing right ear on second dive, but managed to resolve, the cold water seems to have worked wonders flushing out sinuses for the new season

Portland in March sounds good. Would like some more information ie accommodation, dive sites, fills, etc.

Leaky

Not sure of the dates yet, though 6th onwards to weekend would be good for me.

For dive sites have a look at http://www.scimitardiving.co.uk/

                                    or http://www.fathomandblues.co.uk/godiving/dorsetdivingsites.html

Air fills are either at Scimitar, as they now have a permanent site and second hard boat, or F&B

I am sure Bandit would be able to supply even more info.

Nice to hear you all had good diving last weekend, my diving days are over for the moment, I am stuck with my foot up for the next 6 weeks at least following my operation, although I may get over to Leasowe Castle for the next meeting!

KT how did you get Paul out for a dive, did you have to give him a free scuba review?
