We are planning a trip to Scotland for the weekend of Friday 29th April to Monday 2nd May.
We will most likely be staying at Hunters Quay, as in the past, and the diving will also be as previously.....Loch Striven on Friday, Loch Fyne on Sat (boat dives available) and Loch Long on Sunday. If enough are interested we may try the Akka in the Clyde!
Costs will be kept to a minimum and the trip will be on a no profit basis but as it is a double Bank Holiday weekend the chalets will be a little more expensive. We estimate a cost of about £85 per head to include accommodation, tea & coffee, meal on Friday, BBQ on Sat, packed lunches Sat & Sun and ferry ticket (enough if we car share).
This is always a great trip and suitable for all levels of qualified diver though a drysuit is a must at this time of year. Kit hire will be available to club members on a first come basis. Bear in mind that air fills will only be available on Saturday so we suggest two cylinders per diver.
Post here, PM me or email me at nick.whittingham@virginmedia.com to register interest.
If I can make it back for a few days before I head off to the Phillipines I will go. Not sure on dates yet so I'm only a possible. Hope to see all you guys soon. Cheers Ian
So far there are 9 people going - but there is potential space for any late comers if you're interested. Let us know ASAP
Going so far are
Gill & Nick Alix & Mark Paul H and his dad, Del Richie Pete Murdock Colin Salisbury
We have managed to strike a deal with them - which will benefit us one way or another but some maybe more than others. They have thrown in a free night for the Thursday which means we have the lodges available to us from 4pm on Thursday 28th April to the morning of 2 May. So, for those that get up to Dunoon early, the lodge will be available immediately to you - no hanging around until 4pm. Or if you are off and would like to take advantage of another night, you are free to go up on the Thursday.
As usual included in the cost is meal on Friday night, packed lunches on Saturday and Sunday, and the usual BBQ (rain or shine) on Saturday night.
There will be one ferry ticket available per person. This is to encourage car sharing.
Just to confirm, because this is right in the middle of the two BH weekends - the price has risen slightly, however not so much that it makes it unaffordable, especially with a free 4th night. We reckon we can do this for £95 per person still. The cost will reduce if we fill the 10th bed, and will reduce even further if we get 12 people going! We will need deposits of £50 per person as soon as possible now as the full payment will be required by 31st March 2011.
So, any more for any more? There is plenty of info around diving on
Well, the Dunoon weekend is over and what a weekend it was!
Started on the Thursday night with three of us getting up there by 10.30pm and having the opportunity to unpack and get into the holiday mode before everyone else arrived. Others started arriving from 8 am onwards and by 4 pm everyone was down at the beach at Loch Striven , most kitted up to do the barge. Water temperature was between 9 and 11 degrees but with the beautiful weather, it felt warmer. Back to the lodges for Chilli and baked potatoes followed by cherry pie and cream! Mmmm
Saturday morning all off to Loch Fyne and we did the very easydive at Furnace quarry. In off a sloping beach, drops of quite quickly, but water quite clear. Lots of like in the rocks; most found dogfish aplenty, lots of lobsters, crab etc. Dive 2 of the day was at Creggans Inn, just down from St catherines. A sloping beach type of dive bit with lots to find. Small flatfish skating on the sea bed, squat lobbies, pipe fish, and quite good vis (if you didn't kick the sandy bottom!) Back to the lodges for the Saturday night BBQ, and as it was Nick's birthday, plenty of chocolate birthday cake!
Sunday and Loch Long at the oil rig and down to the A frames. Vis not as good as we have seen it but the life on the old pier just gets more prolific every time we go. Second dive was at Conger Alley. This is a really good rummage dive poking the torches under all the rocks and crevices looking for congers. Unfortunately we didn't see any congers but saw a very curious wrasse! A few left to head back in the afternoon and with so much BBQ food, we enjoyed another barbecue and played on the rope swings!!
The weather was absolutely fantastic; it really couldn't have been better and the company was great. To top it all, because we had a latecomer join the party we were able to reduce the cost to £85 per person for the weekend.
We hope to be doing a re run in the Autumn around the end of September when the sea will still be fairly warm.
KT and Leaky
